PFC Howard S. Allen

Howard Allen was from New Lexington, Ohio. He entered the Marine Corps Sept. 20, 1967 and received his basic training at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He arrived in Vietnam Feb. 22, 1968 and was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 3rd Platoon. He was only in Country for 2 months when he was wounded on April 14th 1968 Easter Sunday. He sustained fragment wounds to the head and the abdomen from a hostile explosive device while on patrol in the vicinity of Thua Thien (Click for Map) Republic of Vietnam. His condition was serious, and remained poor and was being treated aboard the USS Sanctuary, a naval hospital ship. Howard ended up having three brain surgeries while he was over there.

After returning home he had a daughter and was still in and out of hospitals. Sadly only after a few years, Howard Allen passed away when he was 27 from a motorcycle accident. He is buried in Tucson, Arizona.

There’s a story saying, When Allen was wounded, he was having a hard time breathing and what saved his life was a Marine from New York (no name) and a ball point pen.

Thank You Howard Allen and we will never forget you. And thank you Stacy for sharing the story of your father.

Hello I am Howard's or Steve as I called him brother. I served in the Navy as a Machinst Mate 3 class. While I was in boot camp I was told of Steve's death. I had been writing to him and had a few letters sent back from Steve. I have always wondered about Steve's time in the Marines and because oof this web site I am now able to know what happened to my brother. Thank you so much for putting this web site together. Feel free to E-mail me with any other information about Steve. The last I saw of him was just before he Joined the Marines. Reply

I am Steve's 2nd cousin, Dottie Jean's (his Mother) 1st cousin. Our Mother's were sisters. I remember Steve from when he was a little boy, so darling, and later as he entered the Marine Corps. I sent him cookies while he was in VN and was so saddened when he was so badly wounded. Later his death. Thank you for his Service record and thanks to the one who helped to save his life before he was lifted out to the hospital. Reply
